Canstruction at the NYS Fair
August 23rd, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Canstruction - It starts with one can. To feed the Hungry. To lift the spirit. To change the world.
Canstruction is using one can of food as a catalyst for change. One can to represent the building blocks of massive sculptures. One can to prove that every act of kindness makes a difference. Since 1992, Canstruction has contributed more than 17.5 million pounds of food to community food banks, demonstrating that we can win the fight against hunger.
Six teams of local architecture and engineering firms will gather in the Horticulture Building at the New York State Fair to build giant sculptures out of donated canned food items. The teams area judged by a panel of architectural experts as well as the New York State Fair judges on categories such as Best Meal, Structural Ingenuity and People’s Choice. Judging will take place on 8/23 at 3pm. The structures are to be made entirely from canned goods which will be donated to the Food Bank of Central New York after the fair wraps up. The structures will remain on display throughout the length of the fair and viewers will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite design
Five local architecture firms will compete in 2014's Canstruction:
- King+King Architects
- NK Bhandari Architecture and Engineering, PC
- Bivens & Associates Architects
- Open Atelier Architects/Lend Lease
- Tetra Tech, Inc.
- Holmes King Kallquist
Each firm will build a structure entirely of non-perishable food on Saturday, August 23 beginning at 10am in the Horticulture Building at the New York State Fair. On that day, representatives from Food Bank of Central New York will be on hand with information about their work and will accept monetary donations. At the end of the Fair, the non-perishable food items will be donated to Food Bank of Central New York to distribute to individuals and families in need within the emergency food network.
