Volunteer Spotlight

Fred Sage has been a regular volunteer at Food Bank of Central New York since 2005. On a typical day, he can be seen laughing with other volunteers and staff while sorting through donated goods. After 11 years, Fred has become so familiar with the inner workings of our warehouse he can often be seen helping others who are new to the Food Bank.

“My reason for volunteering at the Food Bank is very simple. I was brought up in a large family and at times food was short. I can remember my mom sometimes having homemade pancakes for dinner at night.

When I left home and got married, my first wife and I had one daughter. Although we were both working, sometimes we did not have a lot of food. After all the bills were paid there were times that money was tight. Back in the 60’s there was no food bank or local pantries, but we made it.

Today we have these [organizations] and I have made it my mission along with my wife to do all that I can to make sure that people don’t have to be hungry. Also I believe that those of us who have much should be willing to help those with less.”

When he is not volunteering here at the Food Bank, Fred spends time helping at the Baldwinsville Food Pantry, directly serving hungry friends and neighbors in his community.
