More than Just Books: Help fight hunger with Onondaga County Libraries and CNY Food Bank

Saturday, September 23, 2023

Kids have a chance to learn about hunger and help fight it with a new partnership between the Onondaga County Public Library system and the Food Bank of Central New York. This month is Hunger Action Month, so the library and food bank are joining together to bring awareness to the issue in our community. There will be several readings where people can contribute donations throughout the month.

Karen Belcher, the Executive Director of Food Bank of CNY said, “We will do the same thing where we have a little intro about the food bank, a book about hunger will be read and we’ll talk about it and we’ll raffle off a little gift for the children and then just really it's hopefully engaging them to want to get involved and to help combat hunger in our communities and look for help if they know that somebody’s in need.”

Blessed Sacrament Elementary School students listened to a story read by 93Q's Amy Robbins and were able to do their part to help those in need.

Each story read through this program deals with hunger and helps start a conversation about what it means to be hungry. Two students from Blessed Sacrament said they felt like they learned a lot.

Maria Ciereck, a student at Blessed Sacrament said, “Today we learned about how the food pantry helps out people who don’t have food.”

Another student, Giavana Herron said, “And how to help them get food and help them fuel their bodies in the future.”

Even just a few can donations connect the students to the cause.

“It made us feel like we were a part of something special.”

the next readings will be at the Northeast Community Center satellite library and Soule Branch.

According to Belcher, “We can do something together, we can ask for help we can find resources, and that there are resources out there for families and children.”
